We start with an evaluation based on the theories of neuromuscular dentistry to assess the relationship between your jaw joint, muscles and the way your teeth come together, or your bite. These all need to work together in harmony for ideal comfort and jaw position. Occasionally, when we treat a misaligned bite, we solve the trouble of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and permanently solve the problem with our gentle, non-invasive techniques.
If you have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea and have difficulty using a CPAP(Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) a device to splint the airway and keep it open with forced air, we can offer an alternative device that many patients find more comfortable and more convenient – the SomnoMed MAS ™. This small, custom-made splint treats both snoring and mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea by gently moving the jaw forward.
This forward movement tightens the soft tissue and muscles of the upper airway, which prevents obstruction of the airway while you sleep. The tightening created by the device also prevents the tissues of the upper airway from vibrating as air passes over them – the most common cause of loud snoring.
The SomnoMed consists of both upper and lower dental plates that allow normal mouth opening and closing for greater patient comfort and wearability. In fact, most people find it so easy to wear, it only takes one or two nights to get used to wearing it, and it is so tiny, it fits in the palm of your hand, making it easy to carry when traveling.
